Stanley (Stan) Harold Pitt, age 88, of Logan, IA, passed away on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, 2023.

Stan was born on January 17, 1935, in Woodbine, IA, the son of Harold & Emma (Wiepert) Pitt. He attended school in Woodbine, Logan, & Missouri Valley through the 8th grade when he left school to go to work farming for family & local residents.

In 1954, Stan enlisted in the United States Army & proudly served his country until 1957. He attended Basic Training at Fort Carlson, CO. He participated in maneuvers traveling from Colorado to Louisiana. After Basic Training, Stan attended school in Aberdeen, MD, where he received his G.E.D. While there he & his buddies toured New York City & Washington, DC. After school, he was stationed with the U.S. Army Garrison Alaska, at Fort Greeley. America’s Arctic Angels – Arctic Tough! Their mission is Midcourse Missile Defense. It is also host to the military mission of the Cold Region Test Center. His responsibilities there included snow removal for the entire base. One of the tasks he was assigned to was testing sleeping bags, by spending the night outside, with only a sleeping bag. When he was off duty, he enjoyed fishing with his buddies. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1957, he returned to Missouri Valley, Ia.

Through his sister, Dorothy, Stan met the love of his life, his soulmate, Darlene Van Pelt. They were married on December 5th, 1959, in Council Bluffs, Ia. They were married for 63 years, until Darlene passed away on September 4th, 2023.

Early in their marriage Stan worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Anderson Excavating. In 1962, the couple started their family. They shared three children, Julie, Michael, & Thomas. Their family grew to include six grandchildren & six Great Grandchildren.

The family lived in Council Bluffs until 1972, when Stan purchased a Caterpillar & went into business for himself. He later went to work for the Harrison County Roads Department. He was promoted to Foreman & held that position until he retired in 2000.

After retirement, Stan enjoyed traveling with Darlene, spending time with family, spoiling his Grandchildren, birdwatching, gardening, & woodworking.

Stan was a proud man. He was strong, kind, honest, & fair. You could always count on his word & his help if you needed it. His love was unconditional. The most important thing to him was family. He was very proud of the time he spent in the Army. He loved practical jokes, especially the ones he pulled on people! He was a good man his entire life!  We will miss him dearly, but we are so proud of the way he spent his dash!
