Sandra (Matthews) Sims

Sandra Jean (Matthews) Sims was born on October 20, 1937 in Cincinnati, OH. She was the daughter of Henry and Carrie Matthews. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. Sandy’s life transitioned on Saturday, October 1, 2011. She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Granville Matthews, mother, Carrie (Mickey) Inez Matthews, and step-mother, Mary Alice Matthews, her brother, William Matthews, grandchildren, Dominique Davis and Israel Miller and niece Cordie Rhodes. The family moved to Logan, IA when Sandy was seven years old. She attended Redingbauh Elementary School, Beebeetown School, Logan High School and Jenny Edmundson School of Nursing. Sandy was married to the late Carl Reuben Wright which resulted in the birth of four children, Carl, Jr, Michelle Rene, Suzette Ilene, and Barbara Kaye. Sandra later married Charles Sims resulting in a total family number of 20 kids. Sandy was a dedicated Registered Nurse who worked for over 10 years as the Head Nurse of the Fifth Floor at the Veterans Administration Hospital prior to an automobile accident which left her in an irreversible vegetative state as a young mother. She was a strong and persistent woman even with extensive brain damage. During her stay at Westmont Care Center in Omaha, Sandy was selected as Resident of the Month at Westmont Care Center in 20?? . Sandy enjoyed spending time with her four children and the neighborhood kids. She was actively involved in her children’s education and extra curriculum activities where she served on the Parent Teachers Association Committee, and as a Brownie, Girl and Cub Scouts Leader. Sandy devoted her time as a volunteer worker with Planned Parenthood in Omaha, Nebraska. Sandra and her mother would engage her children and other kids in outdoor activities, such as fishing, hiking, camping, and picking mushroom and blackberries, as well as swimming, gardening, horseback riding. Sandra also introduced her children and others to the farm life of weeding soybeans, picking corn, milking cows, feeding pigs, gathering eggs, and various other farm activities. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. Sandy had a relaxed style of discipline which was to “tell the truth.” If her kids followed these rules, they were rewarded; however, if they did not, they received double punishment which normally meant no extra curriculum activities for an extended time, such as no television, sleep overs, or telephone privileges. Sandy was very generous and considerate of others. She would share her surplus of fresh vegetables (corn on the cob, green beans, tomatoes, and peppers) with her neighbors when she returned from her weekly farm visits to her parents’ home. She often visited with neighbors and dear friends Ruth and Donald Dickinson and the late Everett and Dorothy Fitch who both had extensive gardens. Sandy was also an excellent cook who often delighted family and friends with her exquisite and mouthwatering meals. Sandy leaves to carry on her spirit of giving and caring: one son, Carl (Robinlyn) Wright, Jr. of Galveston, TX; three daughters, Michelle Rene Wright of Atlanta, GA, Suzette (Eric) Flodberg of Bradenton, Fl, and Barbarakaye (Julius) Miller of Fountain Hills, AZ; one brother, Roy Matthews of Omaha, NE and two sisters, Sarah Harris of Memphis ,TN and Patricia Gaines of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, MeShawn Wright, Josalyn Riedler Chambers, Julius and Alexander Miller; one great grandson, Andrew Riedler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
