Rev. Werner F. Wetzstein

Rev. Werner F. Wetzstein, age 96, of Logan, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Werner was born August 16, 1917, in Lake View, Iowa to Ernest and Clara (Suter) Wetzstein. He spent his early years near Odebolt / Early Iowa and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Odebolt on March 29, 1931. He graduated from Early High School in 1935. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and would serve in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Following his time in active military service, he worked as a civilian sonar technician at Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, CA. While there, he was united in marriage to Helen Velsor on February 9, 1957, at St. Paulus Lutheran Church. In 1958, Werner left employment with the U.S. Navy to pursue his calling as a Lutheran Pastor by entering Concordia Seminary in Springfield, IL. He was ordained at his home church (Immanuel Lutheran Church) in rural Odebolt, IA. on July 1, 1962. He would faithfully serve his Lord for forty (40) years at congregations in Woonsocket, SD.; Cedar Mills, MN.; Worland, WY.; Audubon, IA.; Logan, IA.; and Magnolia, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Eugene and Arnold. He is survived by his wife Helen; sister Lucille Lange; sons Douglas (Diane); Eric (Catherine); Kurt (Michelle); Karl (Lydia); daughter Paula Lehr (Patrick); and eleven (11) grandchildren. A Prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at the Logan Memorial Chapel in Logan, Iowa. Memorials may be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Logan, IA. 51546 or “Lutheran Ministries Media”, 5 Martin Luther Drive, Ft. Wayne, IN. 48825. Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Post 6256 and O’Hara Seeley Post.
