George Franklin Oliver

It is with deep sadness that we announce that George Franklin Oliver, 66, of Logan passed away in his home on January 16, 2022.

George was born on May 2, 1955, in Atlantic, Iowa to William and Ruth (Nichols) Oliver. He grew up in Harlan, Iowa and graduated from Harlan High School in 1973. In July of 1974, he joined the United States Army, proudly serving until July of 1977. After serving, George attended college at Iowa Western Community College, where he earned three diplomas in 1985 for Machine Operations, General Machining, and Tool and Die Making.

Once he had earned his diplomas, George lived in Lexington, Kentucky and West Palm Beach, Florida where he worked at the VA Hospital. In 1999, George returned to Iowa and began working for the DeSoto Bend U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where he continued to work up until his retirement in 2012.

George was a joy to be around, and a truly dedicated friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him. People close with George could always count on him for a good laugh and a sympathetic ear. When George wasn’t helping a friend in need, you could find him reading a good Western, or working on various projects. George had a natural talent for woodwork and metal work, creating many beautiful pieces over the years, such as jewelry, walking sticks, and photo frames. George was also very fond of animals and enjoyed spending time outdoors. His love for animals led him to volunteer at the Harrison County Humane Society in Logan, as well as feed any cat that happened to live around his home. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Lexington, a dedicated friend of Bill W. for over 40 years and had recently been taking courses to join the Catholic Church.

George was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his aunt Mary (Nichols) Dennis and her husband, John Dennis.

George will be greatly missed by his daughter Julia Oliver, her partner Paul Urzendowski, and her mother Susie Daugherty; his son Jerry Stogdell; his grandsons Warren and Aiden; his partner Diane Gardalen, as well as her children and grandchildren; many beloved cousins; countless friends, who are better described as “bonus family”; and his dearly loved cat Cuddles.

I’m so sorry for the loss of George. He was a great neighbor. My Rick enjoyed his visits with him. He was a great dad and loved his little girl, Julia, who now is a beautiful young woman. I understand grief and it is so hard. I will keep his family in my prayers.

George was a 1973 classmate, and a North Harlan neighbor. Sad, when mom told me the news. Haven’t seen ya for a while, but it always hurts to lose a classmate and neighbor.

George was an amazing grandfather, I could always count on him to make Aiden a priority! I was confused when I hadn’t heard anything from him and Aidens birthday was approaching…… my heart is truly broken, knowing the only thing that kept George from his grandson was his death. I didn’t know he had passed away, I just found out today, February 23, when his son Jerry told me through Facebook messenger! My condolences to all of his loved ones, he will be missed!!!!
