Berniece Catherine Hammitt arrived in the world on January 9, 1920, to John and Mildred (Herrick) Ostdiek on a farm south of Underwood, Iowa. She joined a big brother Wayne, and sisters Geraldine and Mary Claire. Her sister Shirley would join them as well. The family moved to a farm south of Beebeetown, where Berniece would grow up learning to garden, can fruits and vegetables and raise chickens. She attended school all of her years at Beebeetown, graduating with the Class of 1939.
Berniece always had a deep love for dancing, especially to the big band sounds of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. It would be at a dance that she would meet Claude Hammitt. They were married on June 2, 1943. Claude farmed all his life at the Hammitt farm, and Berniece joined him and loved being a farm wife all of her life. She continued her love of gardening, growing beautiful flowers, canning, raising chickens and helping with the cattle as needed. Throughout her life, she and Claude continued dancing with many of their closest friends. In later years, Claude and Berniece took several cruises to different island locations and they both loved seeing different parts of the world.
Berniece also had four boys; Steve, Larry, Roger and Kirk. She loved her family dearly and was very proud of each one of them. She dearly loved all of her grandchildren and loved to have them come to the farm to visit.
Berniece was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; parents, John and Mildred Ostdiek, son, Steve Hammitt and his wife Cathy, grandsons, Mike Hammitt and his wife Terry and Chad Hammitt, brother Wayne, sisters Geraldine and Mary Claire.
Survivors include her family; Larry (Jill) of Minden, IA, Roger of Logan, and Kirk (Cynthia) of Logan; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Berniece passed away on August 31, 2018 at the age of 98 years, 7 months and 22 days after living a very good and happy life.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, at Logan Memorial Chapel in Logan, Iowa.
The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at St. Anne’s Catholic Church following the committal service.

1 Condolence
My thoughts and prayers go out to Berniece’s family. She was a very kind and caring lady. I met her through Steve and got to know her really well. She would always give me a hug and say it was nice to see me. She will be missed. Give Steve a hug for me when you see him in Heaven!
